“Peru is consolidating its position as a key player in the production and export of quality seeds, addressing global challenges with innovation, sustainability, and collaborative work.”
Since the 1990s, Peru has emerged as a leading player in the global seed market, particularly in the production of hybrid vegetable seeds for export. This activity has generated more than $115 million in added value and 7,500 jobs annually. Climate diversity, the availability of skilled labor, and broad production windows are some of the advantages that position the country as a strategic partner for large seed companies .
The growth of international seed trade has been sustained, with a global market valued at $4.5 billion. In this context, Peru has capitalized on its strengths, but faces threats such as the spread of pathogens, poorly coordinated regulatory changes, and competition from new countries such as Ethiopia, Vietnam, and China. These factors require a solid strategy to maintain competitiveness.
One of the sector’s main concerns is the proliferation of pathogens that can affect seed quality. Furthermore, the lack of coordination in the creation of regulatory frameworks could severely impact production logistics. Added to this are constant internal political changes and the migration of young people to cities, which reduces the workforce in rural areas.
Despite these challenges, optimism persists. The recent bill promoting seed exports in Peru, sponsored by Congresswoman Nilza Chacón Trujillo, offers incentives and measures to strengthen competitiveness and promote small and medium-sized producers’ access to certified seeds. Furthermore, the efforts of APES and ADEX have facilitated the overcoming of regulatory barriers.
Peru must continue to look to the future with a clear and optimistic vision. Collaboration between the private sector, authorities, and academia will be key to maintaining growth and consolidating the country as a leader in seed exports, ensuring sustainable and equitable development in the agricultural sector.
